The moment when you need it after all

Today was such a day that from language perspective wasn’t quite a successful one. For this reason I simply need to write a positive blog post about something that happened to me just a few days ago. This “thing” happens from time to time but still rarely enough to be something special.

While learning / looking up vocabulary, have you ever asked yourself if you will really need this word one day? But nevertheless, for whatever reason, you learn it.

But how amazing is this feeling, when you unexpectedly find yourself in a situation when you need this word, and you know it and just for that it was so worth to learn it?????

I’ve came across this a few time during the last months I’ve always been so excited! It’s a feeling of deep satisfaction and still when thinking about those moments now, I’m really happy and start smiling :)

An example? This summer I made the effort to learn the names of animals in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. I looked them all up, transferred them to Anki and so they are now part of my vocabulary routine. Although animals don't play such a vital part in my personal life, I thought it might be useful to know these words. And they were....!

lizard: When do you really need to talk about lizards in a foreign language. I guess no too often, but I included it in my wordlist. And then during vacation I was lying on the beach , trying to read an Italian crime novel and what appears? Una lucertola!  I didn’t get the rest of the sentence, but hey, I least I knew there was a lizard..

badger: Many children don’t even know how a badger looks like. And yes, I’ve seriously asked myself if I’ll ever need this word … and I did! Who watches the Spanish version the serial The Big Bang Theory knows, that once a relative of Sheldon Cooper died after an incident with a tejón! (could be another animal in the English version, in the German it’s a raccoon).

raccoon: I wanted to learn this world because I really like raccoons. They are so cute! But it’s definitely not animal you meet often here in Europa. But on Monday at university I had to interpret a short and simple speech from Spanish into German. And was the speech about? About an experience with mapaches…

wild boar: My father is a hunter, so I thought one day I might need to translate something for him and diligently learned this word. Two weeks ago I was out in the French speaking city of Geneva eating a burger with my friend Maria. What was this week’s special burger? Sure, sanglier!

tadpole: The German word is Kaulquappe and was pretty sure I will never need this word, not even in English. But in one serial - I don’t remember which one - there was a board in the background of a lecture hall, where the English word tadpole was written on. I was pretty flashed to understand its meaning :)

And these were just a few examples of experiences in the first, let’s say, five months, after studying all this words.

It’s really worth the effort (and pain) to acquire a basic vocabulary and thereby not limiting yourself to the 10 most used words of this field.

And whenever I'm repeating vocabulary and ask myself why I'm doing this to me, I remember these small but great experiences and say: therefore!

Deutsch

Heute war mal wieder so ein Tag, an dem sprachentechnisch nicht alles ganz rund gelaufen ist. Deshalb muss ich heute einfach mal etwas total Motivierendes schreiben. Erst vor ein paar Tagen ist mir nämlich wieder was passiert, das immer wieder mal vorkommt, aber selten genug, um es trotzdem als was Besonderes zu sehen.

Habt ihr euch beim Vokabel lernen/recherchieren schon mal gefragt, ob ihr dieses Wort jemals brauchen werdet? Aber nichtsdestotrotz lernt ihr des trotzdem (aus welchem Grund auch immer).

Aber wie mega ist bitte das Gefühl, wenn ihr ganz unerwartet in die Situation kommt, das Wort zu brauchen und ihr könnt es und es hat sich einfach nur jetzt schon gelohnt, das Wort zu lernen?????????

Mir ist das in den letzten Monaten ein paar Mal passiert und ich hab mich einfach jedes Mal so gefreut! Da stellt sich ein Gefühl der Genugtuung ein und eigentlich freue ich mich immer noch, wenn ich drüber nachdenke :)

Ein Beispiel? Ich habe mir im Sommer mal die Mühe gemacht, die Bezeichnungen der Tiere zu lernen (Englisch, Spanisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Portugiesisch, Russisch). Also ihr wisst schon, alle möglichen Tiere rausgesucht, ins Anki kopiert und dann regelmäßig gebüffelt. Obwohl ich jetzt nicht der größte Tierfreund bin, denke ich mir doch, dass das hin und wieder praktische Wörter sein können. Und siehe da!

Eidechse: Wann bitte muss man über Eidechsen sprechen? Also ich nicht oft, aber ich hab’s in meine Vokabelliste mitaufgenommen. Und da versuch ich im Urlaub mal einen italienischen Krimi zu lesen, was kommt darin vor? Una lucertola. Den Rest des Satzes habe ich nicht verstanden, aber wenigstens wusste ich, dass eine Eidechse vorkommt…

Dachs: Viele kleine Kinder wissen heute wahrscheinlich gar nicht mehr, wie ein Dachs aussieht. Und ja, ich habe mich wirklich gefragt, ob ich das Wort mal brauchen werde … ich hab’s gebraucht. Denn wer die Serie Big Bang Theory auf Spanisch schaut, der weiß, dass irgendwann mal ein Verwandter von Sheldon Cooper durch einen Zwischenfall mit einem tejón starb. (In der deutschen Version ist es glaube ich ein Waschbär)

Waschbär: Dieses Wort musste ich lernen, denn ich liebe Waschbären, ich finde sie einfach super süß. Aber es sicher kein Tier, das in Europa oft vorkommt. Am Montag saß ich im Kurs Simultandolmetschen und musste eine kurze, einfache Rede aus dem Spanischen dolmetschen. Worum ging’s in der Rede? Um ein Ferienerlebnis mit mapaches …

Wildschein: Ok mein Vater ist Jäger, vielleicht muss ich mal für ihn was dolmetschen … also habe ich brav das Wort für Wildschwein gelernt. Vor zwei Wochen war ich mit meiner Freundin Maria in Genf Burger essen. Was gab es da für einen Spezialburger? Na klar, sanglier!

Kaulquappe: Ja genau, Kaulquappe, die Kinder von Fröschen. In irgendeiner Serie, keine Ahnung mehr welche, stand auf einer Tafel im Hintergrund eines Hörsaals das Wort tadpole und ich hab's verstanden :)

Und das waren jetzt nur die außergewöhnlichsten Beispiele von Erlebnissen, die sich in nur fünf Monaten, nachdem ich die Wörter begonnen habe zu lernen, ereignet haben.

Es lohnt sich wirklich, Grundwortschatz zu lernen und sich dabei nicht auf die 10 häufigsten Wörter pro Thema zu beschränken.

Und immer wenn ich mich beim Vokabel lernen frage, warum tust du dir das an, erinnere ich mich an diese kleinen Begebenheiten und denke mir: darum!
